The light of the new day hit my eyes as my computer, in her warm contralto, told me it was daybreak. I looked down on the bed. There before me were two items I had attempted to bring with me from the land of dreams--gifts from one of the many people I visited last night. I thoughtfully picked up the medallion and the sword.
Tokens of goodwill. If, one day, I do get to visit Amber in body, these are proofs of my identity and intentions. Or so the gift-giver had told me. A nice girl she was. The one who had made me most welcome in my nocturnal visits. Yes, I mused, she does deserve that sweet guy almost too reticent to make a play for her...
My attempts to contact them had not, apparently, been detected, since no guards or any other lowlives has shown up. My precautions had gone well, it seemed. As I got up and walked to the treadmill, I thought about the results of my somewhat risky gambit.
They were a diverse bunch, the people I visited last night. Their reactions to the news I had ranged from belief and understanding of my plight, to suspicion, to dismissal, and in a couple of cases outright hostility. Especially that red haired sorcerer. What WAS his problem, anyway? And that strange one. I couldn't decide for the life of me if she wanted my blood or another body fluid of a different color altogether.
And the nature of the experience! In some dreams, I had almost no control over the situation--a helpless spectator, trying as best I could to convey my message. In others, I had a lot of control and power. That one where I was able to bring in the girl, for example...I hope I didn't bollix his life too much. My intent was only to gain attention, not to cause trouble.
I finished my workout, and followed it with a shower and breakfast. My computer, Dataina, informed me I had no new messages. As I finished my food, I thought about my next move. I had warned them of the danger, that was good. More than one of them had wondered if I had anything better to do than merely shout dire warnings. Indeed, I did. A trip to the Assembly chambers was in order, today, I think. Gather more information on their plans.
And, of course, as I left my apartments, I mused that, hopefully, one day, that this land of my enemy would suffer the same fate as they had inflicted on my own. Hopefully, the people I had contacted would help me do just that, and prevent their own worlds from being ravaged at the same time. With that happy thought of the future in mind, I walked out into the new day...
