Toireasa, Princess of Amber
- Pawn of Power (200 pt version)
- Torri makes a sour face at Jayson's proclamation of the matter's importance. "Ah, I see -- no casual business, very important . . . so I guess being the Avatar of the Unicorn is a rather 'casual' thing all said and done then, and I'm just not capable of comprehending the 'very important' . . ." Her rather caustic tone leaves little doubt of what she thinks of that.
"Feeling rather important are you?" he quips sarcastically.
- -excerpt from a conversation between Toireasa and Jayson
Ah, Toireasa, our flame haired equestrian. She's as lovely as she is determined, a characteristic some would call stubborn. The daughter of Gerard, she has many of his attributes; great strength, compassion, a love of family, and a sense of responsibility. She calls Castor and Pollux her brothers, and treats them as such without hesitation. She often puts the needs of others before her own. Her Sidhe lineage lends her a sense of honor and beauty. The deep religious conviction that she shares with her Father regarding the Unicorn makes her a shining example of piety. With the right man she'd be a wonderful lover and partner.
Now for the bad news.
Toireasa also proclaims herself as the Avatar of the Unicorn. Vested with power by divine right, Toireasa follows the wishes of her mistress with a zeal. The problem is that her 'mistress' is an entity that is not even remotely human. That makes Torri one of the most dangerous types of individuals, she's an idealist.
Current Objectives: Fresh from the fiasco in Arden, Toireasa has joined the Quest to capture Triton and return the Sapphire to Queen Moiré. Problem is, she's unearthed more mysteries, such as why her cousins Triton and Jayson are locked into a terrible struggle that both adamantly refuse to explain to her. She wishes to continue her personal campaign against the Omphalos, but the events in Rebma draw her away.

GM Tips for Playing Toireasa
- "If you do not wish to do that, then you will have to satisfy me by allowing me to see to the return of the Sapphire as I've already described, or take action against me to prevent that. Once I've seen the Sapphire returned to Her Majesty, I'll leave you to your machinations. I'll certainly not guarantee we'll never cross paths again, but you'll be rid of me for the time being. You cannot hide the Sapphire from me -- I will find it wherever it is, if you or Triton try to take it elsewhere. It will be returned, and in my presence, and then I will go. Those are my terms."
- --Toireasa to Jayson--
Toireasa is an idealist. She knows right from wrong, and has no difficulty pointing it out to you. What's worse is she can be very convincing. Toireasa loves to talk, discuss, debate, and sometimes argue. It doesn't come from a desire to upset others, it's just that in her mind she can clearly see the course to take in any situation and is frustrated when others don't see it as well. Her encounter in Arden with Clarissa Clark is a perfect example; she told Clarissa not to tamper with the Door and she didn't listen- to everyone's misfortune, along with a large 'I told you so' from Torri.
She is also insatiably curious. Possessing the ability to scry with the Pattern, she does not use this sparingly. You can count on her being almost as canny and aware as Sand, or even Fiona. She wouldn't abuse it for personal gain. But if it means that the universe is at stake, count on personal privacy taking a back seat.
Lastly, Torri is a hero. Her primary concern is that of the welfare of everyone. She is convinced that she has been chosen by the Unicorn personally to be it's spiritual representative in the physical plane. That makes the defense of Amber and that of the universe her business. It's a business that she takes very seriously. Don't misinterpret, Torri is a very good person with an enormous heart. She just happens to believe that she knows what's best for you, and she has a Cosmic Power telling her that she is justified.
Toireasa as Mother
One may or may not be in an enviable position as the child of Toireasa. It all depends, if love, affection, nurturing, caring, sensitivity and care are the child's heartfelt desires, they will get all that and more. To a young person, Toireasa would be 'Super Mom.'
The reality could very well be that this condition will not end, way past the point it becomes smothering and intrusive. Torri could easily be loathe to release any child from the protective clutches of her bosom. After all, she already mothers the Universe.
Toireasa as a Player of the Games of Strange Bedfellows
- "…I can tell you only this: Trust not the Pattern, nor the Logrus either, nor any of their spawn, till this matter be settled."
- --Corwin, in Prince of Chaos
Hate to say it, but Toireasa qualifies as one of the so-called 'spawn' that Corwin is referring to here. You just can't trust someone who so ardently follows the commands of a being that is alien as the Pattern. True enough, Torri sees herself as the Avatar of the 'Unicorn', not the Pattern per se. But aren't they two sides of the same coin? Ask Merlin what he thinks of his encounter with the Unicorn in Undershadow, or even being forced to breed with Coral on the surface of the Pattern…
Toireasa is going to do what she feels is necessary, and at the moment that is a fairly decent and noble thing. What happens when what is necessary ceases to be as 'decent and noble' as it is now? Recall the only decent line that came out of the movie Peacemaker with George Clooney. "I'm not afraid of a man who wants a dozen nuclear weapons, I'm afraid of the man who only wants one." Torri has God on her side, telling her that she has the authority to do whatever is necessary. That's an awfully large blank check.
Allies and Enemies:
Her real enemies at the moment are the Omphalos, but they tend to be impersonal adversaries. She has a budding rivalry with Jayson that has all the makings of an episode of TV's old Moonlighting series, fraught with quarrels, minor betrayal's, renewed teamwork and an unusual dose of sexual tension that they both deny. On the flip side is Apollo, who may not be her actual enemy, but considers her to be a primary source of irritation and a nuisance he'd like to see his own Avatar avoid.
