Tips for Playing Dagny

"The glint from the silver star necklace she often wore caught me in the eye a few times, and when I blinked, I saw the afterimages."

Carol's Story

There is a secret to Dagny's origins. Dagny's mother was spirit-ridden at the time of her conception.

Carol, a young woman of amazing vitality, had been chosen by the Hegemony. The Hegemony had as much to do with Dagny's conception as Rinaldo or Carol. UnderShadow denizens have always recognized the superior state of those living in Reality.

The UnderShadow is a realm of potential and pure vitality. Dagny is connected to it through the aura of her mother.

For countless millenia, the spirits of the UnderShadow have lain beneath the actions and lives of Reality. Someimes, very rarely, a spirit or a group of spirits will try to break upward into the Reality above them. The best that can usually be accomplished is to join with a native of Reality in a synergy of soul. Benefit accrues to both partners. The spirit can experience the tangible nature of what is Real, the mortal can expand to the limits of their potential with the added soulweight of the spirit-rider.

This connection gives Dagny unusual powers and perceptions. Dagny is a Shaman.

She can perceive and converse with the unseen minor spirits that travel just beneath the surface of Reality. Since she was a small child, she has been able to see things that are attached to the UnderShadow. Many times, when she was little, she would converse with her "invisible friends", eventually the adults of her world convinced her that she had to stop "pretending" and find "real" friends.

Yet, those beings have not ignored Dagny. They still carry news of her life and activities to the deeper strata of the UnderShadow, where the authors of Dagny's connection wait for the right moment.

Soon, Dagny will remember how to "see" her friends again. Soon she will realize that she doesn't need an inattentive father. Or even Amber.

In a way, her mother still lives----

For the spirit who dwelt with her mother was not destroyed in the car accident that claimed Carol's life.

Shaman powers also allow Dagny to "borrow shapes" from the spirits of the UnderShadow. This means she is able to temporarily "overlay" herself with invisible qualities of some of the spirits, if she can get their permission. Some spirits have strengths, or senses, that are much different than the folk of Reality. Dagny can borrow the speed of a Trull, or the wit of a Kitsune for brief intervals, to add to her own abilities.

Dagny as Mother

Dagny would be a attentive and thoroughly loving Mother. Compensation for her own upbringing.

However, she is young, and has no plans for making a family yet. Expecially since she considers it to be a long term commitment of her self. She has worlds to explore first.

Dagny as a Player of the Family Games

From Dagny's point of view, the Family Game is the reason that she has no mother, and has not had a father. The attraction of Amber, and its politics is foreign to her. She is, moreover, not prepared to like it very much. But Amber, she will find, is a powerful draw. She will have to resolve the conflict in herself.

She has the strength, but will she be perceptive enough to put aside her anger with her father and realize that Amber is her home.

Allies and Enemies: Dagny has allies beyond measure. A certain hegemony of Megadenizens from the elder clans of the UnderShadow. Unfortunately, for them, they cannot reach her directly, and she, as yet, does not know enough to try to reach them. Soon. When the moon is full, and the barriers are at there weakest point, Dagny will be drawn to Tir, where another step in her destiny and the Princess of Spirits will unfold.

Tir, the place where all points of the Greater Universe can be accessed.

Then the sparks will fly and Amber will see the potential of Dagny Thorsonne.
